Bernina has a full line of embroidery machines, including their own software.

But all of the machines will work with downloadable designs and open source software.

So let’s start at the bottom and work up.

The Bernette 340 Déco is in the words of Bernina

"...a good quality,lower-priced sewing machine.

This is an embroidery only machine. Priced in the $1,000 and under range. None of these machines are cheap, but they are well made and will last a long time.

This machine is equivalent to the Janome 340E and is built by Janome!

Why buy this machine instead of the Janome 350E? If you already own a Bernina you may want to keep it in the family.

Or maybe you want the cool slot for the embroidery scissors!

This really comes down to personal choice, price and the sewing machine dealer you like.

The Bernina Aurora embroidery machines are also sewing and quilting machines.

There are three sewing machines in this line: the 450E. 430E and the 450 QEE (quilting and embroidery).

All three of these sewing machines can do ordinary sewing and embroidery. The 450 QEE is adapted for quilting. Sewing Insider will discuss that machine on our quilting machine page.

The Bernina 450E & 430E are good all around multi-use machines. They come with 379 built-in stitches and 9 buttonholes.

The display screen is small, you must purchase the optional Bernina editing software and you must use your computer for editing. The only way to see the progress of your stitching is if you have your computer hooked up to the machine.

While this is a good general use machine, if you are a serious machine embroidery enthusiast, give this sewing machine a pass.

But the Artista model is a nice machine. It has a large color touch screen with on board editing and USB compatibility with your computer.

(As a creative person, I find this machine ugly. so ugly I don't think I could sew with it).

A snazzy detail I like is that you can hold a button up to the touch screen and the Bernina Artista will automatically determine the size of the buttonhole.

When the embroidery module is on the machine it is big, you need to have some space to spread out when you use this sewing machine to embroider.

But what it does is simply amazing.

Two embroidery options that interest me are:

In color sequencing, the machine finds all parts of your design that use a particular color and will embroider them. This saves many thread changes.

Endless Embroidery is for large, long border designs where you would have to re-hoop the fabric. The Endless Embroidery option has stitched in reference points so that when you do re-hoop you can easily and accurately line-up your design.

The machine has a thread stand that can hold several spools and cones at one time and has a telescoping delivery system to reduce drag on the thread.

The full color touch screen has online animated tutorials, and drag and drop editing.

The front –mounted bobbin winder has variable speeds, and get this: you can tell it how much thread to wind on the bobbin. And any stitch can be brought into an embroidery design, even a buttonhole.

The patented Stitch Regulator presser foot gives you total control in free motion stitching, as well as perfectly sewn stitches every time.
