Bernina: One of the Whiz-Bang, Gold Standard Embroiderysewing Machines on the Market

Bernina Embroidery and sewing machines fall into the whiz-bang category. In fact just writing Bernina Sewing Machines, gives me chills.

Some day, some day soon, Santa will leave a Bernina top-of-the-line sewing machine under my tree. And when I die, bury me in my pink leather chair cradling my Bernina sewing machine!

Still a family-run company, Bernina sprung from the design by company founder, Fritz Gegauf of the first hemstitch machine. Hem stitching is that lovely stitching on fine linens and your grandmother's hankies. From there, Gegauf developed the first home sewing machine and the Bernina brand was born in 1924. Over the years Bernina sewing machines continued to be the most innovative, and expensive sewing machines on the market. The now universal snap-on presser foot was designed by Fritz' daughter,Odette Gegauf Ueltschi. The first fully automatic and then the first computerized sewing machines were built by the Bernina sewing machine company. And today, Bernina's Embroidery sewing machine is the state of the art.

For awhile in the late 1980s the Bernina sewing machines were a little stodgy in design. Which lent a feeling of stodginess to the brand.

Now, Bernina is as trendy as the next sewing machine. And not to be outdone by their competitors, the Bernina Sewing Machine company has recntly sponsored a Project Runway type competition at Kent State University.

Do you sense the excitement in the industry? I do!

There are amazing embroidery sewing and quilting machines on one end, and trendy competitions for emerging designers on the other.
