Oh! Brother! I Want to Embroider! All About Brother Embroidery Sewing Machines

Oh! Brother! I want to embroider! Sorry, I couldn’t help it…the name of this sewing machine just does that to me! The same people that make printers and other electronics also make sewing machines.

And as you progress through this page from “value-priced” to the double whiz-bang top of the line, your mouth will water.

The Double-Whiz-Bang is at the bottom of this page if you want to start with the extra large banana-split.

The most affordable of the Brother embroidery machines, and a popular model is the Innov-is 900.

It is a fairly basic embroidery machine, but compared to the first computerized machines of a few years back, it is light years ahead.

The Brother Innov-is 900 embroidery machine is a good buy for a machine that sews, quilts and embroiders. It is a good first machine and will do the job for a more advanced sewist.

Here are some features:

  • 105 built-in embroidery designs including 35 designs featuring Disney® characters
  • Computer Connectivity with Update Capabilities
  • Brother’s Exclusive My Custom Stitch™ Feature
  • 6 embroidery lettering fonts and 3 sewing lettering fonts 129 built-in sewing stitches
  • Sew Nice Pic™ Frame for Added Customization
  • Embroidery Design Boutique CD featuring 100 additional designs Brother has an array of embroidery cards for purchase with designs from Christmas, to fruit and veggies, to gorgeous butterflies. I know that Disney characters are popular, I never understood the appeal, but the Brother Innov-is 900 comes with 35 Disney/ Pixar designs.

Next up is the Brother Innov-is 2800D. In their own words Brother says about this machine:

“…So many features, yet so affordable…”

This embroidery sewing machine is the first of the Brother line to look more like the Janome and Bernina embroidery machines.

It has a large color screen, online tutorials, and built-in USB ports. Brother has added their AHA, or Automatic Height Adjuster that allows the machine to automatically account for different thicknesses in fabric.

This is a big problem for sewists, to keeping smooth stitch quality on thick fabrics. And Brother has added the AHA to this machine and those above it in features.

It is a feature-rich, mid-range embroidery sewing machine. And a good choice for someone that has developed a high interest in and skill level with embroidery. And it is an equally good choice for someone that is honing their sewing and embroidery skills.

I also like that Brother emphasizes that their machines can be used for sewing, embroidery and quilting. And here are some of the features of the Brother Innov-is 2800D embroidery sewing machine:

  • 211 built-in embroidery designs including 129 designs featuring Disney® characters
  • 314 decorative stitches
  • 14 buttonholes
  • 3 built-in alphabets
  • Oversized color touch screen LCD
  • Automatic Height Adjuster™ AHA™ Feature
  • Pivoting Function
  • Back to Beginning Key?li>
  • Powerful on-screen editing features
  • Built-in Dual USB ports
  • Maximum Embroidery Area 10"x6"
  • Rotation in 1, 10 and 90 degree increments
  • Sewing Insider tip: If your budget allows, stretch for a little more sewing machine than you think you need. This avoids outgrowing a sewing machine too soon.

    Prepare to Be Spoiled!

Brother Duetta 4500D Advanced Sewing and Quilting Machine.

“ Prepare to be spoiled!” I like that sentiment, and that is what Brother says about this sewing embroidery machine.

The Brother Duetta is fast and pretty close to the whiz-bang machines. Maybe it needs its own category: whiz.

The Brother Duetta does a lot. It has on board editing, and tutorials.

The touch screen is long and narrow and all the way to the right.

It does have a “Back to the Beginning” function in case the thread breaks or for some reason the machine stops. It will resume where it left off and stitch the design perfectly.

The work lighting is very bright. Brother is especially proud of its lighting on all of their machines.

The Duetta embroidery machine comes with its own USB mouse. I am not sure that that is important, but it is a feature.

And of course this one has automatic needle threading.

Here are some of the features of the Brother Duetta sewing and embroidery machine:

  • 134 Built-in Embroidery Designs including Disney characters
  • 14 buttonholes
  • 487 stitch functions ( but they do not say how many stitches do what)
  • Automatic Height Adjuster™ (AHA) feature
  • Pivoting Function and Back-to-Beginning Key
  • My Custom Stitch™ Feature
  • Large 12” x 7” Embroidery Area
  • Dual USB Ports and Built-in Embroidery Card Slot
  • Super bright LED work lights
  • Extra USB and pre-loaded embroidery cards are available for the Duetta. It’s a nice machine, I like the name.

Brother's New Quattro 6000D Double-Whiz-Bang Embroidery Machine with 100 New Features!

And now the Brother double-whiz-bang Quattro 6000D Embroidery machine. Okay, this machine is over the top!

Quatro (with one T) means four in Spanish. And that is the reason this machine is called Quattro. Brother touts that it has four functions:

  • Sewing
  • Embroidering
  • Quilting
  • Crafting
  • Well kids when you use a sewing machine for crafting, you are sewing. Quilting is sewing as well. It is a nice marketing ploy and all the sewing machine manufacturers use it.

It is the Brother corporation’s 100th anniversary, so the Quattro has:

”… 100 brilliant, unprecedented, new and improved features…”

I am not going to list them all here, but I will talk about some of them.

    The Brother Quattro has:

  • Built-in embroidery designs
  • On-board tutorial movies
  • On-board editing
  • Automatic threading
  • It is fast and powerful. It has all of the sewing and embroidery features that its Brothers have. (Ok I did it again another Brother joke) and most of what the other whiz-bang machines have.

But here is what is different:

Up Close and Personal a Camera at the Needle Shows You What's Happening

Brother's exclusive InnovEye™ Intelligent Eye Technology and Up-close™ Viewer.

I love this option. The InnovEye™ displays an up close and detailed view on the screen of what is happening right at the needle plate.

Button and buttonhole placement is done accurately using the sensors in the InnovEye™.

Edge stitching will be accurate, no more straining and struggling to keep top-stitching and edge stitching right where you want it.

And when using the free arm for a cuff or hem, the precision eye will keep everything aligned.

Have you ever struggled with proper placement of embroidery designs?

The Brother Quattro embroidery machine uses a special positioning sensor that you place on your fabric and the InnovEye precisely places your needle and embroidery.

    Runway Lighting.

(Runway is a trademark of Brother, everyone is capitalizing on the popularity of the TV show, Project Runway)) bright clear LED lighting that covers 10 inches of space around the needle and does not cast shadows and has 5 different adjustment levels. One of which is off. they actually point this out uin their brochure. So who makes the jokes? Brother claims that no other lighting is required.

These two options make my heart sing. I have vision issues and good lighting and precise stitch placement are problems for those with aging sight or other vision problems.

With a sewing machine like this, I will still be sewing at the old folks home!

The display screen on the Brother embroidery sewing machine is large, clear, bright and anti-glare.

There are images built in that can be your screen saver, or you can upload your own images. (I am not sure that this has much to do with sewing, but it is intriguing).

    Print and Stitch

This is cool. Especially if you make crafts and want to add some texture and dimension or your beloved's face to a t-shirt.

You can upload a photo in jpeg format, edit it, and then save it to your computer or a flash drive. Then you print it on fabric, or transfer paper. Then you attach the InnovEye™ technology and sensor positioning sheet to stitch your design.

It won’t cost much to own this wonder, just sell the second car, or embroider some pearly white teeth and have your kids wear your embroidery instead of a retainer!
