Good sharp scissors with comfortable handles are necessary for crafting, quilting, accurate fabric cutting. And don’t use them for cutting pizza or paper!
Sewing scissors are a staple in your sewing basket and should be reserved exclusively for cutting fabric.
You need a sharp edge for clean and accurate cutting. Even though I recommend using a rotary cutter everywhere you can, you may not take to the rotary cutter.
You will still need good, sharp scissors for cutting small shapes and sharp corners, things the rotary cutter cannot do.
Things to consider when buying scissors:
Are you left or right handed?
Are the blades long and sharp?
Are the handles comfortable and can it accommodate two or three fingers?
Are they lightweight?
You will need two to three pair of scissors:
6” basic shears, only for fabric
Smaller “embroidery” scissors for close cutting
Sewing Insider Tip: The two orange-handled scissors in the photo are exactly what you need.
Pinking shears (they have a serrated edge) they will give a zigzag edge to fabric and keep it from raveling.
You can find pinking shears that are lighter weight with plastic handles
Sewing Insider Tip: I hardly use my pinking shears anymore, I use my serger or one of the many zigzag stitches to finish a raw edge.
Another pair of scissors I own, are purely sentimental. They are the golden “stork” embroidery scissors a reproduction of the embroidery scissors of an age gone by.
Just like everything else of the Victorian Era, fancy and fussy were the design keywords of the day.
The stork scissors are not very sharp, and totally impractical. They were a gift from my daughter many years ago, and I treasure them.
Not everything in your sewing basket and sewing room needs to be sleek, modern and functional!
Scissors you should not buy!
These scissors may look interesting and graceful, but they are totally impractical for cutting anything.
You can only get one finger in each handle, imagine trying to cut something bigger than a two-inch scrap. Your fingers will go numb!
Trying to control the lenght and weight of those long blades with just two fingerts is lik asking your eight-year-old daughter to walk to school in your size 8 stiletto heels.
Sewing Insider tip: Spend the money on good sewing scissors now. And enjoy them and your sewing projects for years to come!
Sewing Insider Tip: Watch your local fabric store mailers for announcements about free scissor sharpening.
