In fact I thought I was being a traitor when I bought a Kenmore!
Until sometime in the 1980s Singer Sewing Centers were the only source for buying one of their sewing machines. You could buy in the store, or have a salesman come to the house and demonstrate a machine for you.
It was even possible to rent a Singer sewing machine!
